A look inside Katon’s all-white funhouse

It’s a fun thing to speculate why state GOP chairman Katon Dawson was a member of an all-white country club for over a decade, but is only now worried that there’s no members of a swarthier persuasion. Haven’t seen the most exclusive club in Columbia? Well, here’s a look from a wedding reception that was held there in June:

Hmm – looks like they don’t mind the people serving them to be black.

I didn’t know this club was all-white. My band played an event at Forest Lake Country Club back in the mid-’90s before everybody had a cell phone. We had set up our equipment and were coming into the down time between set-up and guests’ arrival. I had a sick child at home and asked to be pointed to a phone so I could call home and check up on him. I was directed to a phone on a table in the foyer. I sat down and placed my call (using my card, so it was on my own dime). One of the higher-ups came by and interrupted me saying, “We’re not used to the help tying up our phone line. There’s a pay phone down at the gas station!” I told him I was the talent, not “the help”, and continued my call. Now I know why I was so warmly welcomed.

Thank you, Mr. Vierdsen, and thank you, Vincent, for shedding some light on this.
