Mitt Romney’s PAC raising big dollars, spending big dollars

If you’re wondering what former Mass. Gov. Mitt Romney is up to, beside waiting for the veep call, it’s that he’s raising a whole hell of a lot of money for his leadership PAC, the “Free and Strong America PAC.” In just its first quarter of existence, the PAC has raised nearly a million dollars.

And, if you thought he was going to hang onto it for any period of time, you’d be wrong. The money is going out at a good clip, and he’s spent roughly half of what he’s taken in. Most of the cash is going toward Republicans candidates for the House, all across the country. Needless to say, these guys sure welcome it in what’s going to be a tough year for a lot of Republicans. Unfortunately for candidates in this state, no one in South Carolina got any cash the first time around.

What does this say? Well, it says the man isn’t done quite yet. You don’t do extensive fundraising and cut a lot of $1,500+ checks for strangers out of the goodness of your heart. Clearly, an Obama win in November could mean a Romney re-run in 2012.

Of course, you have to spend money to make money, and Romney confidant Spencer Zwick’s firm is doing some good business. The PAC gave SJZ LLC $93,750 in just six weeks. Must be good work if you can get it. The rent for the PAC’s offices is a tidy sum, too – $10,000 per month in the same building (perhaps same offices) as was his presidential campaign. Hope the view is nice.

But, that doesn’t mean that the PAC isn’t doing some straight-up, grassroots fundraising. Hell, they even have T-shirts!

For a contribution of $50 dollars, you get that nifty shirt there, of which FSA PAC says, “It’s great for the beach and cookouts, and by wearing it, you will show that you are committed to making a difference in this critical election.”

I don’t know Mitt, but the last thing I want to do is start a political discussion at the beach and cookouts. Just sayin’.

No rest for the leery [Boston.com]
