Even a broken clock is right twice a day

It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen – Fogle, Will Folks, the S.C. Policy Council and Rep. Nikki Haley are right – we need more roll call votes in the General Assembly.

All too often, especially in the State Senate, legislators are able to cast votes on all manner of bills, amendments and other various matters without having their vote recorded in the official record. Of course, the reason the above want roll call votes is about spending issues, and the bill, H. 5019, only addresses bills that have a fiscal impact.

That’s fine and all, but we need more than that. It’s about transparency and accountability. We elect people to the General Assembly with the belief that they will represent the wishes of the district they represent.

The only way to hold representatives accountable is to have roll call votes on every vote. If legislators object to this for any legitimate reason, it would only be because it would be a pain in the ass at times. But, as is said in many smoke-filled back rooms, tough titty.

It’s past time for our elected officials to show their constituents exactly how they’re voting and why. Anything less is doing a disservice to the people voting them into power in the first place.
