In what looks to be a new tradition at The Capstone, Alabama is in talks to open up the 2009 season at the Georgia Dome in an engagement with Virginia Tech. This year, Bama kicks off against Clemson in Atlanta.

According to the Tech sports information office, the Hokies are a lock, but the Atlanta Sports Council president, Gary Stokan, said that Tide officials aren’t close to signing an agreement.

The matchup between Bama and Tech has been a long time coming – Crimson Tide fans still have bad feelings about the shellacking that Virginia Tech gave Alabama in the 1998 Music City Bowl. It was the Hokies’ first win against the Tide in 11 games.

This blog personally has a grievance against VPI, mostly because of the proprietor’s several residencies in the Old Dominion. There are a lot of bandwagoning Tech fans out there, who weren’t wearing the ugly maroon and orange colors in the early ’90s when UVa was regularly kicking ass and taking names (Shawn Moore, what what!).

Hopefully, the Tide’s athletic administration (who have been excellent in recent years in facilities improvements, fundraising and the Saban hire) will get it together and schedule the Turkeys for some tasty revenge.
